The cuisine of the region is very rich and diverse, due both to its geographical situation of hills and valley areas on the Granada side and to their ancestral recipes inherited from the former Muslim and Mudejar inhabitants. Various outstanding dishes can be enjoyed in the area such as the typical puchero, the pot of San Antón, bolones stew, courgette soup with noodles, porridge, goat with garlic or Cottage lamb and on the Malaga side garlic soup, tomato soup, Maimones soup, gazpacho and gazpachuelo or fennel soup. We also have to point out the rich meats and artisanal goat cheese of Játar and Montefrío, the famous and delicious trout and sturgeon of Riofrío and sardines on a spit on the Mediterranean coast of Malaga. We cannot fail to mention the famous tropical fruits of Otívar. With respect to its pastries we have the cakes of the nuns in Loja or the Poor Clares of Alhama who make carob cake, oil cakes, and fritters.

You can taste Muscat and raisins in the form of wine, Competa's “Noche del Vino” (Wine Night) is a well known opportunity to taste these wines.

In the highlands of Alhama, between west Granada and the Coast, are located the Ginez Plains, and these host vineyards at 1,100 metres of altitude where you get Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah , Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay grapes. Much of the harvest for the wines produced in this area comes from these vineyards.

In Ronda, Nerja, Axarquia, Malaga and the Mountains to the north of Malaga we find unique ways of making wine... two ways of making wine in the same geographical area under the protection of two different D.O.s, DO. Málaga and DO. Sierras de Málaga.
